
C.H.O.I.C.E.S. is a gender specific enrichment program, which targets girls ages 10-17, who are at-risk for early pregnancies, poor academic achievement and juvenile delinquency. This program strives to help the girls grasp a better understanding of the importance of developing themselves in terms of their personalities, interests and inherent abilities, while enhancing their chances of success and happiness in their future career, in hopes of becoming more productive in the communities and daily lives.
C.H.O.I.C.E.S. is an acronym, which stands for career development, health and wellness, opportunities, cultural enrichment, educational growth and self-esteem. All of the aforementioned topics help structure the curriculum and variety discussion topics, information tools that are used throughout the program. The program focuses on other issues facing adolescents and teenage females, such as goal setting and decision making processes, leadership development, community service, youth advocacy, peer pressure, social skills development, and more. C.H.O.I.C.E.S. Program promotes positive girls talk sessions. Girl talk provides for a safe haven for the girls to talk among the peers about sensitive issues/topics from a female perspective, as well as obtain feedback from their peers. The program also encourages input from the participants, as well as from the parents and site administrators. The program is often tailored meet each group of girls' specific needs and interests during that time the program is being implemented, to ensure that they get the most out of the program.
The goal of the C.H.O.I.C.E.S. Program is to target specific areas with prevention methods regarding healthy living, strategies for avoiding risky sexual behaviors, drug abuse, poor academic achievement, violence, school drop-out, as well as develop and strengthen leadership potential and develop strong interpersonal, decision making, and social skills. In addition, the program focuses on building healthier and stronger relationships between mother and daughter, as well as relationships among peers. Other goals targeted are geared toward reduction in teen pregnancy and delinquency, prevent substance abuse, increase/promote academic achievement, increase promotion/graduation rates, increase levels of self-esteem, develop strong relationship building and leadership skills, develop goal setting/decision making/communication skills.
This program is structured for after school hours, some Saturday sessions; however, some sessions can be conducted during school hours. The program provides services throughout the metropolitan area, serving St. Louis City and St. Louis County families, such at elementary and middle schools, apartment complexes, and community centers.
