The OASIS Intergenerational Tutoring Program promotes literacy with a proven approach designed to build children’s self-esteem and positive attitudes towards learning while strengthening literacy skills. Working with Lutheran elementary schools, OASIS pairs older adults with young children with underdeveloped reading and language skills. The adults work one-on-one with the students each week as their tutors, mentors, and friends.

The tutors find the mutually warm and caring relationships they develop with the children to be personally rewarding. They value the opportunity to contribute their time and experience to meet a critical need within schools who are finding it necessary to cut funding for special staff and programs.

LFCS is proud to be a partnering agency with The OASIS Institute to promote this program within Lutheran grade schools. Currently, 19 Lutheran grade schools in St. Louis and the surrounding areas are being served by the OASIS Tutoring Program.

OASIS tutors participate in a successful training program where they learn activities, techniques, and strategies to help children learn to read. The tutors also receive ongoing training at regional meetings where they can share experiences, solve problems, gather new ideas, and build relationships with each other. If you are over 50 and would like to become a tutor, mentor, and friend to a youngster who is waiting to share in your life experiences, please contact Luanne the LFCS office for the next tutor training schedule.
