Missouri YOP Tax Credits Awarded to LFCS
01/22/07
ST. LOUIS, Jan. 22, 2007 – Lutheran Family and Children's Services of Missouri has
been awarded $250,000 in Youth Opportunity Program tax credits for 2007 by the Missouri
Department of Economic Development.
Through this program, those interested in making a donation to LFCS are eligible to take a
50 percent state tax credit on their donation. For example, if a donor gives $1,000, he or she will
receive $500 back in tax credits. Or, for every $2 a donor gives to LFCS as a YOP donation, the
donor receives $1 in Missouri tax credits.
“This is a win-win situation for everyone involved – donors, LFCS and the state of
Missouri,‿ said Dianne Johnson, assistant director of development at LFCS. “In addition to
benefiting donors, YOP tax credits are a fundraising incentive for LFCS. They encourage LFCS to
raise $500,000 and distribute all $250,000 in YOP tax credits to donors.‿
YOP tax credits are allocated by the Missouri Department of Economic Development to
organizations that provide positive youth development programs and that discourage criminal and
violent behavior. This program encourages support for proven, effective programs. Any individual
or business paying Missouri income tax can participate.
YOP tax credit contributions benefit LFCS’ statewide youth development programs, which
address critical issues in the lives of youth who are 21 and under. These programs include the
WINGS (Women in Need Growing Stronger) program for pregnant and newly parenting women
in crisis and the CALL (Children Alive Learning Leadership) group mentoring program, which
addresses the specific needs of children and youth who are experiencing challenges to their
educational and social success. Also benefiting is the CHOICES program, a
prevention/intervention subsidiary of the CALL Program designed specifically for girls.
Interested donors and those with questions about the YOP tax credits may contact Johnson
at 314/754-2801. Donors will be given the appropriate tax form.
LFCS also was awarded $250,000 in NAP tax credits in July 2006. The Neighborhood
Assistance Program is a similar tax incentive program that provides assistance to communitybased
organizations and enables them to implement community or neighborhood projects. NAP
tax credits also are awarded by the Missouri Department of Economic Development to selected
organizations through an application process. Only businesses or individuals with business income
are eligible to donate through the NAP program.
